“Family,” a series of large-format portraits, celebrates the universality of the human experience. My subjects are those with whom I have a close relationship. Inherently diverse and representative of American culture, they include relatives, friends, patrons, students, neighbors, and mentors. The work represents my conviction that we are, in our atomic essence, the same— despite our differences in religion, ideology, ethnicity, class, sexual orientation, and gender, among others. Our commonality unites us and we, following neuroscience and Relational Cultural theory, yearn to be united. Our wellness, and that of our culture and planet, depends on our connection to others.
